FLUSHING, N.Y. (Jan. 15, 2011) - NYIT men's basketball faced a hard-fought 78-71 loss to Queens College (N.Y.) Saturday night in East Coast Conference play. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 6-7 on the season and 4-5 in league action, while the Knights improved to 9-4 overall and 6-2 in ECC play.
Four players were in double-figures with sophomore Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.) posted a team-best 19 points. Senior Eric Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) added 16 points, while junior Russell Holloway (Budd Lake, N.J.) and sophomore Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively. Holloway also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
For the Knights, Akim Neverson registered a game-high 29 points and 11 rebounds. Jeremiah Mordi and Khalil McDonald each added 12 points, while Anderson Labase tallied 11 points.
The Bears took an early 12-7 lead in the first half but the Knights fought back to knot the score 12-12 on a three-pointer from Anderson Labase. The half was tied twice more before Queens claimed a six-point advantage, 24-18, on a trey from Nana Boateng with 8:56 on the clock. NYIT fought hard to close the gap but the closest it could get was within three points on three occasions. The last was after made free throws by Rodriguez, 34-31, with 19 seconds remaining.
After the Knights claimed a seven-point lead at the 16:46 mark on free throws by Akim Neverson, Rodriguez scored four straight points off a jumper to bring the Bears within two points, 42-40. NYIT trailed by one point four times before Roberts put the Bears on top 51-50 with 9:36 to play. However, Neverson responded with a traditional three-point play to put Queens back in control for good, 52-51. The Knights widened their lead to 12 points, 68-56, at 3:04 on six straight points from Neverson. Rodriguez broke free of the Bears three minutes scoring stalemate with a three-point play, 68-59, at 2:55. The Miami, Fla., native then dropped another trey to come within six points, 68-62. Free throws kept Queens far enough ahead to claim the win, 78-71.
NYIT returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 when it hosts neighboring rival C.W. Post in ECC action. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Recreation Hall.
