CALDWELL, N.J. (Dec. 18, 2010) - NYIT men's basketball rallied to outscore Dominican College 45-40 in the second half, but it was not enough as the Bears fell 87-70 to the Chargers in the first day of the 2010 ECAC Holiday Classic, hosted by Caldwell College. With the loss, the Bears dropped to 3-4 on the season.
Senior Daniel Berg (Osteras, Norway) and sophomore Dominic Scurry (Ozone Park, N.Y.) led the Bears with 15 points each, while Scurry nearly had a double-double with eight rebounds. Senior Jerrell Walker (Stockton, Calif.) added 11 points and senior Carl Kindborg (Stockholm, Sweden) posted eight points and eight rebounds.
The Chargers dominated in the first half as they quickly jumped to a 16-0 lead. NYIT interrupted the run with made free throws from Walker, but Dominican picked up right where it left off and climbed to a 35-3 lead with 9:22 remaining. It was then that the Bears were able to break out of the rut and produce a rally of their own. Starting with a layup from Walker, NYIT went on a 10-0 run to make the score 35-13 on a three from junior Jahari McKnight (El Sobrante, Calif.) and five straight points from sophomore Kayvon Roberts (Corona, N.Y.). The Bears jumped on another run that continued into the second half to close out the half trailing by 22 points, 47-25.
NYIT stormed out of the gates in the second half and brought the score within 17 points, 52-35, in the first four minutes of play. However, Dominican continued to hold the scoreboard. The closest the Bears got was within 13 pints, 79-66, on a show-stopping dunk from Scurry with 2:43 to play. The Chargers went 8-4 to bring the game to a close, 87-70. Despite the loss, NYIT outshot Dominican in the second half 47% to 42% and went 43.8% from behind the arc to the Chargers 0-3 performance.
For the Chargers, Khaleev Ginyard led with a game-high 22 points with six of those baskets coming from behind the arc. Cory Quimby added 14 points, while Michael Calzonetti and Nick Smith each tallied 11 points to give Dominican the win.
The Bears continue action at the 2010 ECAC Holiday Classic with a 4 p.m. tip against host Caldwell College on Sunday, Dec. 19.
