Bears Edge Purple Knights 66-63
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Jan. 21, 2012) – Junior Rebecca Lynch (Hillsdale, N.J.) led with a game-high 22 points to lift NYIT women’s basketball to a 66-63 win over Bridgeport Saturday afternoon.  With the win, the Bears improved to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in East Coast Conference action. The Purple Knights dropped to 5-12 overall and 3-4 in league action.

"Rebecca Lynch played like her usual dominating self on both ends," said head women's basketball coach Anthony Crocitto. "To have a 5-3 conference record at this point is fantastic but we do need to be better on the glass and continue to more the ball offensively. It was a nice road win. Our players work hard to get these and deserve them."

Junior Nikki Jo Rotolo (Rome, N.Y.) added 14 points in the win and registered the game’s only double-double with 10 rebounds.

"Nikki Jo was a rock today, both on the glass and getting several big baskets when Bridgeport made runs," added Crocitto. "Chantel Diaz also continues to improve daily and is slowly becoming a very well-rounded player."

The game was tied twice early in the first half before NYIT pulled ahead to a 25-9 lead on free throws by graduate student Tiffany Seymour (Amityville, N.Y.) with 6:57 to play. The Bears continued to control the scoreboard and claimed their largest lead of the half 39-20 on a jumper by Lynch with 2:01 to play before the break. NYIT held on for a 39-25 lead as the two teams headed into the locker rooms.

Although, NYIT never looked back as it went on to win 66-63, Bridgeport did put together a late 10-1 rally to bring the score within three points in the final minute of play.

For the Purple Knights, Julia Colley and Tanisha Carter tied with 14 points, while Colley had nine rebounds.

The Bears remain on the road for a non-conference match on the road against the Dolphins of LeMoyne. Tip-off is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y.
