OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2011) - Junior Ryan Williams (Stockton, Calif.) tallied a game-high 18 points to lead NYIT men's basketball to an 88-56 victory over Nyack Tuesday evening at Recreation Hall. With the win, the Bears improved to 25 on the season and Nyack dropped to 0-6 overall.
Three more Bears scored in double-digits as junior Antoine Brown (Washington, D.C.) added 17 points, redshirt freshman Jahleel Felix (Flushing, N.Y.) had 16 points and junior David Naves (Bowie, Md.) chipped in with 10 points. Off the glass, junior Azel Prather Jr. (Glenarden, Md.) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, 10 of which were defensive boards.
The first half was tied four times before NYIT push ahead with a 15-0 run to claim a 23-8 lead with 8:58 to play. NYIT's first 11 points were all scored by Brown. The Bears never looked back and headed to the locker room with a 20-point advantage, 39-19.
The Bears momentum continued in the second half as Brown provided a crowd pleasing slam dunk at 15:09 to give NYIT a 27-point lead, 57-30. Click here to view his dunk. The Bears then went on to lead by as many as 39 points with 4:45 to play. The final push began on a three-pointer by Felix at 9:13 and the NYIT held Nyack scoreless for five minutes as baskets from Williams and Felix gave NYIT a 81-42 lead. The Warriors did chip away at the gap in the final few minutes with three-pointers from Louis Allen and free throws may by Khalid Samuels and Chris Gibson.
For Nyack, Jose Pena-Benjamin has a team-best 16 points and Ryan Woodard added 10 points.
NYIT returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when it hosts local rival C.W. Post in East Coast Conference action. Tip-off in the Bears' annual Toys for Tots game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Recreation Hall. In lieu of admission, fans are asked to donate a new and unwrapped gift for needy children.
