OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2012) - Junior Nikki Jo Rotolo (Rome, N.Y.) led the NYIT women’s basketball team with 19 points to claim a 78-56 win over visiting Queens College on Wednesday night on Coaches vs. Cancer night. The result was the third consecutive East Coast Conference victory for the Bears as they improve to 12-7 overall and 6-2 in ECC play, moving into second place in the current standings. The Knights are still in search of their first ECC win at an 0-8 mark and 1-17 overall.
"Nikki Jo is tough to guard when she is in the flow offensively and hitting her mid-range jumper, like tonight," said head women's basketball coach Anthony Crocitto. "JoJo has really picked up the slack for an injured Cierra Baker."
In the first half, junior Rebecca Lynch (Hillsdale, N.J.) scored 10 of her 14 points. Junior Sabrinna Moore (Flushing, N.Y.) put in 14 points and a game-high seven steals. Rounding out the starting group were sophomore Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.), who added 12 points and five assists, and junior Chloe Johnson (Sea Cliff, N.Y.), who scored 11 while grabbing six rebounds, tying Moore and Apergis for the team-high on the glass.
"Our captain, Rebecca Lynch, was her usual, steady self and our glue on both ends," added Crocitto. "Sabrinna Moore did a fantastic job tonight. She set the tone on defense in practice last night and was the difference today."
The Bears’ defense forced 30 turnovers to help claim their largest margin of victory thus far in the 2011-12 season. Despite just edging out Queens in shooting percentage from the floor, 44.1% to 42.9%, NYIT had the clear advantage on the offensive end, taking 26 more total shots while putting in 12 more than their opponent on the night.
NYIT raced out to a 26-4 advantage within the first 10 minutes to quickly seize control of the game. The Bears remained in the lead the rest of the way, not allowing the Knights to get closer than 16 points. Nicole Caggiano led a courageous effort for the Knights, scoring a game-high 26 points, but was hampered by the Bears defense, committing nine total turnovers.
The Bears remain at home for their next contest against non-conference opponent Dominican on Monday, Jan. 30 with a scheduled tip-off for 5 p.m.
