Bears Baseball Falls 17-1 to Hilltoppers

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (Mar. 5, 2011) - Sophomore Ali Rodriguez (Yorktown, Va.) scored NYIT's lone run as the Bears baseball team fell 17-1 to the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky in day two of the CoC Classic, hosted by the College of Charleston. With the loss, NYIT dropped to 0-2 overall.

The run was a game-tying opportunity in the bottom of the first, but from there the Bears fell behind and were unable to recover. NYIT struggled to get key hits with runners in scoring position, although sophomore Dane Hardy (Willingboro, N.J.) led the team with three hits.

The battle on the mound went to Wes Hageman (2-1). He tossed six innings, giving up seven hits and one run. He struck out seven. The loss went to Tom Cardona (Bronx, N.Y.). He faced five runs off seven hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Freshman John Duggan (Belle Harbor, N.Y) threw 4.2 inning of shut out relief yielding just one hit and striking out three.

Defensively, the Bears had a good performance highlighted by rookie Rob Cafiero (Bethpage, N.Y.), who had his first start behind the plate and did an excellent job of blocking and throwing runners out early in the game.

After NYIT knotted the score in the first inning, Western Kentucky tacked on a pair of runs in the following two innings and then rallied for five in the fourth inning. The Hilltoppers final outburst came in the fifth inning, as seven runners were driven home. Andreoli went 4-for-4 with three runs and five RBI to lead WKU to victory.

NYIT returns to action on Sunday, March 6 against host-College of Charleston in the third and final day of the CoC Classic. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
