Baseball wins fifth straight with 9-6 win over LIU Brooklyn
Old Westbury, NY (April 13, 2010) – The NYIT baseball team increased their season-high winning streak to five games with a 9-6 win over LIU Brooklyn this afternoon in non-conference action at President's Field. Junior Jerry Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) lead the offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored for the Bears, improve to 11-12 overall. The loss drops LIU to 8-21 overall.

NYIT scored the game’s first run in the second inning when junior Vin Caposio (Long Island City, N.Y.) singled to right center to score Smith. Long Island University came back in the top of the third inning, scoring twice off of freshman starter Bobby Magnuson (Glen head, NY) take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, NYIT tied the game 3-3, when senior Brian Smith (Nesconset, N.Y.) came around to score on a wild pitch. Magnuson allowed just the two runs on three hits in four innings of work and left with the game tied after the fourth.

The Bears regained the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning, when Brian Smith drove a single into left field that scored Caposio. NYIT tacked on two more runs in the six inning, thanks to an RBI double from sophomore Sebastian Grazziani (Whitestone, N.Y.) and an RBI single by Caposio, that gave the Bears a 5-3 lead.

NYIT pushed their advantage to 9-2 with a four run seventh inning, highlighted by a two run double by Jerry Smith that drove in Efferey Valdez (Flushing, N.Y.) and Brian Smith to give the Bears a 9-2 lead.

The Blackbirds came back in the ninth inning to cut the Bears lead to 9-6 from on a Chris Kievit grand slam. Junior Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario) came in on relief with runners on first and second and two outs, and retired the final batter to earn his first save of the season.
