Baseball ties with Seton Hall 12-12 in eight innings
Old Westbury, N.Y. (April 20, 2010) – The NYIT baseball team played to a 12-12 with Seton Hall University in a non-conference match up at President’s Field this afternoon. The game was called after eight innings of play due to darkness. Junior Vin Caposio hit a grandslam and drove in seven runs on the afternoon for the Bears, who are now 14-14-1 on the season.

In the bottom half of the first inning, junior Jerry Smith hit a single to drive in the Bears first run of the game and two batters latter Caposio cleared the bases with a grand slam to right field to increase the Bears lead to 5-0. In the top of the second inning, Seton Hall’s Will Walsh put the Pirates on the scoreboard with a home run to right-center field.

The Bears scored three more times in the second as freshman Ali Rodriguez hit his second homerun of the season and Jerry Smith followed with a two RBI single to make it an 8-1 ball game. The Pirates rallied in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring seven times to tie the game at 8-8.

Capsio's two RBI double in the bottom half of the sixth scored Jerry Smith and Effrey Valdez to give the Bears a 10-8 lead, but in the top portion of the seventh inning, the Pirates tied the game with two sacrifice flies. Senior Brian Smith countered with a solo homerun to right center field giving the Bears a 11-10 lead, but the lead was short lived as the Pirates took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth, when Mike Rogers hit a two run homerun to right centerfield, giving Seton Hall a 12-11 lead.

The Bears pushed one across in the bottom of the eight and had the bases loaded with one out, but a double play ball ended the threat and the game finished in the 12-12 tie.

Capsio finished the game 3-for-5 with seven RBI and one run scored, Valdez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Jerry Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

The Bears retur to action this Friday as they open up a four game Great West Conference series at North Dakota at 3 p.m.
