CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Mar. 2, 2011) – Two NYIT women’s basketball student-athletes were recognized by the East Coast Conference as
Cierra Baker (Windsor, Conn.) and
Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.) were named all-first team and all-rookie, respectively. The ECC announced the award recipients on Wednesday.
“It is fantastic to see Cierra on the first team and Demitra earn all-rookie,” said head coach Anthony Crocitto. “Cierra had such an amazing season, while Demitra fought hard all year. Our program is moving its course, and we are excited to have doubled our wins from a year ago and to have double representation on these exclusive teams.”
Baker earned All-ECC first team honors after leading the conference in rebounding and steals. She ranked in the top-15 in three additional categories – scoring, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. The guard/forward led NYIT in points per game (17.5), rebounding (12.4), blocks (12), field goal percentage (.411) and free throw percentage (.757). She registered 19 double-doubles, along with a triple-double in Feb. 23’s victory over Mercy College. Baker also ranks third in the nation in rebounds per game. On Nov. 22, she was named ECC Co-Player of the Week after helping the Bears to a 1-1 week and compiling her first two double-doubles of the season.
Freshman guard Apergis averaged 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, while leading NYIT with 79 assists. She also shot 34.0% from behind the arc. She closed out the regular season ranked No. 8 in the ECC in assists. On Feb. 7, Apergis was named ECC Rookie of the Week after averaging 9.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She tallied a season-high 21 points against Bridgeport on Feb. 16 and grabbed a season-best nine boards at Molloy on Feb. 26.
The Bears brought the 2010-2011 season to a close with an 8-18 overall record and a 6-15 ECC mark.
