OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (July 11, 2011) – NYIT Athletics capped off a stellar academic year with 89 students named to the Spring 2011 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. The group will be honored at a luncheon this fall.
“This type of empirical data speaks volumes to the character and commitment to academic excellence of the young men and women who have decided to attend NYIT,” said Clyde Doughty, Jr., director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation.
A record nine Bears achieved a 4.00 grade-point average, with four student-athletes posting back-to-back perfect semesters. The men were led by senior Preston Wasmund (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) of baseball, an accounting major; freshman Matthew DiDonna (West Islip, N.Y.) of men’s soccer, an accounting major; and Julian Marcon (Nandrin, Belgium) of men’s tennis, an aerospace engineering major.
Topping the women’s list were graduate students Marisa Brucculeri (Albertson, N.Y.) and Nicole Constantatos (East Northport, N.Y.) of softball, criminal justice and English majors, respectively. Joining them were senior Alexana Gaspari (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) of women’s tennis, a biology major; senior Taylor Jensen (East Meadow, N.Y.), a childhood education major with a behavioral science minor; junior Melanie Li Foo Wing (Rose-Hill, Mauritius) of volleyball, an interior design major; and junior Lisa Peacock (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) of volleyball, an interdisciplinary studies major with a minor in education.
Marcon, Constantatos, Li Foo Wing and Gaspari each compiled 4.00 GPAs in the fall as well.
Men’s lacrosse was the team leader once again with 14 student-athletes represented on the list. Men’s soccer followed with 12 and women’s soccer rounded out the top-three with 11 student-athletes. Yet, women’s tennis posted the best team percentage with 63% (5-of-8) of the team earning a 3.2 or better GPA.
Individuals must meet a grade-point average of a least 3.2 in the semester to be considered for the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. The Honor Roll is announced twice per academic year; once after the fall and once after the spring semesters.
