Johnson, Apergis and Fessenden Pick Up Bears of the Week Accolades
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2012) - After each week of competition, three NYIT student-athletes will be selected as members of the Bears of the Week list. Weekly selections are chosen from scheduled games starting from each Friday to the following Thursday. Nominations will take into account notable statistics, weekly awards received and/or personal accomplishments achieved both on and off the playing fields. Coaches who reach career milestones will also be considered for this honor. This week's recipients are Chloe Johnson (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and Demitra Apergis (Littleton, Colo.) of women’s basketball, and Nick Fessenden (Greenlawn, N.Y.) of men’s basketball.
Week 5: Friday, Jan. 27 - Thursday, Feb. 3, 2012
Chloe Johnson, junior, Women’s Basketball
Johnson led the Bears in scoring in a win over Dominican (Jan. 30) and a close effort at C.W. Post (Feb. 1) in the “Battle of the Boulevard." The junior notched a double-double with 18 points and a season-high 12 rebounds, followed by another season-high with 19 points as well as three boards. Johnson shot 13-of-24 from the field (54%) and 9-of-16 from behind the arc (56%) in the two games combined.
Demitra Apergis, sophomore, Women’s Basketball
Apergis has been a instrumental factor for NYIT basketball in the past month, allowing the Bears to contend for a postseason spot with a third place standing in the ECC and a current 13-8 overall record. She scored 15 points each in games against Dominican (Jan. 30) and C.W. Post (Feb. 1), while dishing out a combined 11 assists. Apergis was on the floor for a team-high 36 minutes during each contest.
Nick Fessenden, freshman, Men’s Basketball
Fessenden tied for the team-high in scoring in a tough loss at C.W. Post (Feb. 1) with 12 points to help him earn his first “Bears of the Week” nomination. The freshman shot 6-of-8 from the field while recording five rebounds and a pair of assists in just 15 minutes off of the bench for the Bears.
