It’s so slippery! After Ali Rodriguez decided to use the turf as a slip-and-slide, and slide over the bag at third and get tagged out, we really couldn’t muster and sort of momentum to propel us to victory like we did the night before. It is really unfortunate that the season is over but we had a great year and the program can only get better from what we experienced. We played a lot of really good teams and you really cannot ask for much more from our seniors. Every single one of them produced and helped our team to compete with teams such as Auburn University and even yesterday against conference foe Northern Colorado. I would personally like to thank all of the seniors, on behalf of the entire team, for their hard work and dedication to teach all of us how to carry ourselves through the daily rigors of college baseball. This is the last time we will play together as a group and we all ended on great terms. We are excited for the new recruits to come in and pick up where the seniors left off. It is unfortunate that we couldn’t finish the season with a win and the conference championship under our belts but we played four really great games here in North Dakota, where three of the four games we played our opponents were ranked higher than us.
I would like to extend my thanks to a variety of people that have helped out the team along the way. First off I would like to say thank you to our coaching staff. Bob Hirschfield, Ron McKay, Michael Caufield, and Jamie Loeb all helped us out and stuck with us when they could have easily walked away from the team when we had a brutal start to the season.
Thank you to James, Sabrina, Chris, and everyone else who helped out during our games it is greatly appreciated. Thank you to Charita and Dean for their hard work and trying to keep the team as healthy and as injury free as possible. Thank you to associate athletic director, Lenore Walsh, and athletic director Clyde Doughty for sticking with the team and allowing us to compete at the Division I level on a yearly basis. Thank you to the University of North Dakota and the city of Grand Forks for they outstanding hospitality they provided us with all week long.
I would like to give a huge thank you to our president Dr. Edward Guiliano for supporting baseball and allowing us to compete in the Great West Conference and travel so much. Last, but not least, I would like to say thank you to all of our families who have supported all of us to play the game that we all love.
As this blog concludes I would like to thank those for reading this on a daily basis and supporting NYIT baseball. Over the course of the summer, many of my teammates will be reporting from various parts of the country as they play in their summer leagues to prepare for the 2012 season when we will open up against Liberty Baptist Univeristy in Lynchburg, Va. Check back soon for updates. Be good NYIT fans.

Hip Hip Jorge! George Carroll picking up the team for easily our biggest win of the year. Coming from behind once was great but coming back twice in one game especially with our season on the line is huge. it was evident that we were all collectively trying to pull out a win from a very good Northern Colorado team. Their pitcher did a really great job in holding us over eight innings and Sebastian Grazziani capitalized on the only mistake he made all day by hitting easily his biggest homerun of the year. He had a great day not only at the plate but also in the field making some really great plays behind me as a pitcher. It’s a relief when guys like that can make plays on such a consistent basis. There was really not much to say today about the win because so many things went right it wasn’t directed all on one person.
As always I have some team info to report so the friends, family, and fans know what is going on.
-
We have created a new invention called the LACK-AL-COPTER. This is a human helicopter consisting of Dan Lackner picking up Ali Rodrgiuez spinning him so much that they both take flight. Who ever said humans can’t fly?
-
Jon Costa and Jose Checo are now trying out for the United States marathon team for the distance they ran (like children) to celebrate with the team and George Carroll at third base after the walk-off double.
-
Michael Iglesias. Somebody give this guy a belt! Hopefully he goes yard sometime soon with his brand new Rawlings 5150.
-
Ali Rodriguez decided to break two world records today. He ate 4 shrimp scampi’s at our team dinner tonight at the Blue Moose Restaurant (As a Canadian I was upset there was no moose on the menu.) Because of the crazy amount of scampi, he also had a bill that amounted to $65. Other items that contributed to such a price were: salmon entrée, a girly drink, and a brownie dessert, which was very good victory pie.
Right back at it tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. and we have every intention of winning four games in a row in order to capture the GWC championship.
I will leave everyone with question of the day: If you were to tattoo your Blackberry Messenger barcode onto your body, would it scan?
Be good NYIT fans, we wish you were here with us. Stay Classy Old Westbury, Manhattan, Vancouver, Bahrain, China, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.

Well that sucks. 1-1 but we played really well and we know that we have the potential to beat every team in our conference. We are now in the loser’s bracket and we have a tough road ahead of us starting with Northern Colorado tomorrow. Both George Carroll and John Duggan really picked up our team today and had big days. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t come out with a win. We are a very strong team mentally and we will be geared up and ready to go tomorrow afternoon. The good thing about a conference tournament is that we do not have to wait a week until our next conference game and we can get right back to work tomorrow.
The pregame wrestling match saw Dan ‘Lackdaddy’ Lackner defeat Marcos ‘Bam Bam’ Perez. Lackdaddy becomes the UNYITBWC heavyweight champion. Also, Vin Caposio annihilated Long Island native, Steve Cotov, and he is no longer in the league due to the lack of performance. Collectively as a team we have also decided that Eric Cos is the craziest guy on our team and he knows way too many MMA moves to be messed with.
Warning to other pitchers: do not throw at Cos intentionally.
Warning to ball players everywhere: eat before you get to the ballpark and have breakfast food for breakfast not pulled pork sandwiches (*cough*Steve Cotov).
Now even though we cannot get victory pie tonight, we need to pull together as a team and so we have decided to get team tattoos. Hopefully our mothers will like them. Tomorrow, it is time to bring the thunder. Be good NYIT fans.

1-0, only 3 more wins to GWC champions! NJIT has been defeated and we now await Utah Valley for the 4 p.m. game tomorrow at Kraft Field. Today was a big win, getting the first one off our chest and getting a little momentum going into our next round was huge. I wanted to give a couple shout outs to my teammates in this installment for their play during today’s game.
First off, Effrey Valdez really solidified the fact that he was the best player in the conference by crushing a double into right field during his first at-bat and made easily the best defensive play all season. Second, Rob Cafiero trying to put a hole through the Kraft Field scoreboard and running the bases like Usain Bolt. Third, is obviously Marcos Perez. It seems like every time he goes out there now he goes the distance, which really helps us pitchers out knowing that we have an extra day of rest. The addition of his newly-found change-up is really going to help him out throughout his career here and his going to enable him to get deeper into games. Last but not least, coaches Bob Hirschfield and Tommy Cardona for some great managerial decisions that allowed us to get a win.
In other news, in the UNYITBWC (Ultimate New York Institute of Technology Baseball Wrestling Championships) light-heavyweight title bout, Tommy ‘The Father of Iglesias and Perez’ Cardona submitted Steve ‘Roho, Big Red’ Cotov, 23 seconds into the second round to claim his first title. Challengers are welcomed by Cardona. But beware, he will make you his hijo. Anyways, the team is off to Perkins Restaurant to get some well deserved victory pie and rest. Be good NYIT fans.

Coming from Houston yesterday was one of the longest travel days of the year from start to finish. Over a miserable weekend against Houston Baptist University, which saw us drop three out of four games, we were anxious to get back onto the road and head to Grand Forks, N.D. in search for the program’s first Great West Conference title.
Motivation was lacking at 3:30 a.m. when we all awoke to the wake-up calls to pack up and head to the airport for our flight from Houston to Atlanta to Minnesota. Once we arrived in Minneapolis (we weren’t delayed for one of the very few times this season), we still had the dreaded five and a half hour bus ride from the Twin-Cities to Grand Forks.
Even though the travel day yesterday was long and vigorous, it surely did not take a toll on our bodies in our short, but valuable, workout today. We had one of the best practices all year with high-energy and high tempo. It really showed how much we wanted to be here and win the tournament not only for ourselves but for all of NYIT.
We got acquainted with the brand new turf at Kraft Field and it is definitely going to provide a challenge for all teams in the tournament both defensively and offensively. The field seemed to play slow, which is really going to force the infielders to attack the ball aggressively. Offensively, bunting is going to be a major weapon this week if done correctly as the ball rolls level without it leaning foul. The biggest challenge with the turf is the mound. There are not many mounds in the NCAA (if any) that use a turf mound and is going to be a challenge for pitchers getting used to it in a game situation. We practice indoors on turf mounds all winter leading up to the break of our season, but throwing bullpens in a cage is completely different then throwing in the conference tournament. There are a few teams that have the advantage as they pitched on it prior to the commencement of this tournament, but for those who had the privilege of North Dakota traveling to their campuses, the only time they will see the mound will be in pivotal game action.
Aside from the practice and the field, North Dakota has done a really great job in hosting so far with the kids camp today and the inaugural Great West Baseball pre-tournament banquet (or as Stephen MacNamara likes to call it a ‘banket’). Ali Rodriguez, Effrey Valdez, Jerry Smith, and George Carroll did a great job representing our team and our school through the camp, which provided a great marketing tool for our conference and will really establish a fan base throughout the week.
Heading into the banquet, hosted at UND’s $104 Million hockey arena, the school and conference provided great hospitality with a great meal and a well organized awards presentation. Fellow teammates Jerry Smith and Rob Cafiero were rewarded with second team all-conference selections, while Effrey Valdez took home a lot of hardware with a first-team all conference selection as well as Great West’s Player of the Year.
Now as a pitcher, having the three of those behind me provides a lot of confidence not only defensively, but their bats in the line up on a game-to-game basis really help and give you confidence that they can produce and give you the require run support to win games. It is really great to see the three of them pick up awards which they surely all deserve.
Tomorrow is a really big day for the program as we take on our GWC rival in NJIT. We are all excited and ready to pursue the title. Hopefully, tomorrow we can report that we are 1-0 and will play the winner of Utah Valley/Chicago State.
