The creative vision of an NYIT student is marking a milestone in the history of Cohen Children's Medical Center (formerly Schneider Children's Hospital) in New Hyde Park, N.Y., one of the top children's hospitals in the United States and part of the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System. Neil Curcio, a senior majoring in advertising, designed the hospital's official 30th anniversary logo, which appears on its Facebook page (pictured), letterhead, website, and all other promotional and fundraising materials. His design was selected from among various ideas proposed by NYIT students when the project began last year.
Cohen Children's Medical Center is a client of the Carleton Group, NYIT's student-run advertising agency that is the capstone of the B.S. in advertising offered by the Department of Communication Arts. Curcio, who serves as the Carleton Group's account executive for the medical center, references its history in his design by drawing inspiration from an earlier logo designed in the 1980s by artist Keith Haring.
For the medical center and the students, the experience of working together proved invaluable. Clients typically pay thousands of dollars to ad agencies or design firms to come up with logos like the one designed by Curcio, and the NYIT students delivered pro bono design services in a professional manner while learning to manage client expectations, an important skill as they prepare to embark on future careers in the advertising industry.
