NYIT Professor Contributes to Book on Urban Design Ecologies

Urban Design Ecologies

A new book published by Wiley, Urban Design Ecologies, features work by Giovanni Santamaria, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of architecture. His translation from Italian of a selection of Vittorio Gregotti's 1968 tome, The Territory of Architecture, is among the essays in a section on "Megalopolis: The Nature of Sprawl," and was also part of his doctoral dissertation.

"This is an interesting chapter which, in an absolutely advanced way for its time, investigates the rule of urban design beyond the perimeter of the dense city, involving as urban matter and most of all as material for architecture, scale and specificity of landscape and geography, infrastructures and communication," Santamaria says. "Time and dimension of territory are intended as important references for understanding and designing the city in a new coherent way, considering it as complex and integrated overall system."

The book is edited by Brian McGrath and delineates a new way to look at urban structures and phenomena related to their landscapes and complex ecological values. Read more.
