Space Travelling Entrepreneur Speaks at NYIT

Greg Olsen

New York, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2011) – A noted research scientist will talk about his journey from investor and inventor to space traveler, as he is one of the few private citizens in the world who has orbited Earth. The free lecture will be held on Wednesday, March 9, at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).

Greg Olson, Ph.D. – now an entrepreneur in residence at Princeton University – will present his lecture, entitled “From Entrepreneurship to Spaceship” at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway, between 61st and 62nd Streets in New York City. Part of NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences’ 21st-Century Leaders Speakers Series, the lecture is open to the NYIT community and the public. It will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Olsen will speak about his insights on careers in science and technology. He was the third private citizen to orbit the earth on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2005, after training for five months at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Moscow. During his 10 days in space, he performed more than 150 orbits of the Earth and logged almost 4 million miles of weightless travel.

As the founder and president of GHO Ventures, LLC, in Princeton, N.J., Olsen manages investments that include a South African winery and a Montana ranch. Throughout his career, he has been awarded a dozen patents. A popular speaker for students, his technical interests are in the power electronics and alternative energy fields.

Olsen is also active in the New Jersey Technology Counsel (NJTC), NJTC Venture Fund, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology. He received bachelor’s degrees in physics and electrical engineering, and a master’s degree in physics from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He earned his Ph.D. in materials science from the University of Virginia and performed post-doctoral studies at the University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa.
