President Guiliano's Call to Think Globally, Act Locally, Resonates Worldwide

President Guiliano presents at the World University Presidents Forum in Shenzhen

New York, N.Y. (Aug. 19, 2011) — President Edward Guiliano’s appeal to his international colleagues to “think globally while acting locally” has received widespread coverage in the past week.

He made the remark Aug. 13 at the World University Presidents Forum (WUPF) in Shenzhen, China, where he was the only American among 163 college and university presidents.

President Guiliano exhorted his colleagues to “lead by example, looking at everything from how campus buildings are designed and operated to what students are taught in classrooms and how innovation is encouraged in laboratories.” He also called their attention to the university’s central role in advancing solutions and policies on the world’s most challenging issues.

“We must show, tell, and engage others,” he said, adding that truly global universities cannot separate themselves from business, government, “or even from each other.”

The speech, “Globalism and Higher Education: Modeling the 21st Century,” has been covered by media around the world, including Xinhua News Agency and Shenzhen Daily in China, as well as The Philippine Star in the Philippines.

In recent days, New York’s China Press and Beijing’s China Radio International also interviewed President Guiliano for upcoming news reports on WUPF.

The three-day forum, sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, offered a chance for leaders in higher education worldwide to exchange ideas, promote mutual understanding, and deepen intercollegiate and international collaboration and exchanges.
