NYIT’s Koenig to Deliver Keynote Address at BCA 20th Anniversary Cultural Awareness Salute Gala

New York, N.Y. (November 6, 2013) - Robert Koenig, Ed.D., associate professor in the School of Management at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and department chair, Hospitality Management,  will deliver the keynote address at BCA’s 20th Anniversary Cultural Awareness Salute Gala on Friday, November 8.

The BCA is a national, not-for-profit organization devoted to the enhancement of professional and educational opportunities for minorities within the foodservice and hospitality industries.

“I am humbled by the honor to speak at this important event,” Koenig said. When addressing the group that will include industry professionals and educators, he plans to focus on connecting with the students by sharing advice on the importance of integrity, character, principles, honesty, and values in their personal and professional lives. “One of the most important assets you have is your ‘name’ and how you live your life. This, in combination with the professionalism you display, will directly relate to your success in life,” Koenig will state in his remarks.

As a corporate executive chef overseeing seven hotel properties, Koenig was the executive sous chef for the 1985 Inauguration of President Ronald Reagan and then Vice-President George H.W. Bush. He has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and college textbooks, and has appeared on nationally syndicated television and talk radio shows for his work in the foodservice, culinary, and hospitality industries. The executive chef and general manager of the “Original Bookbinder’s Restaurant” in Philadelphia, Koenig went on to create NYIT’s Manhattan Hospitality Program, developed to cultivate the talent and acumen of culinary and hospitality professionals. In addition, he founded NYIT’s Professional Convention and Meeting Association Chapter; is an adviser for the Chinese Business Student Association;  founded the department’s award-winning club, The Society of Hosteurs; and serves as president of the Delta Mu Delta Alpha Chi honor society for NYIT’s School of Management.

The BCA event honors the achievements of diversity in the Hospitality & Culinary industry. This theme of this year's event is "Global Immersion” and will focus on creating dialogue on the advancement of global diversity. It will also offer culinary students from around the country the opportunity to hone their skills in a real-life environment.

The Gala dinner will give a taste of what the future holds for the foodservice industry and will be supported by BCA educational partners and students from George Westinghouse High School, Edison Job Corps Academy, Johnson & Wales University, South Bronx Job Corps Academy, the Culinary Program at Brooklyn Job Corps Academy, Foodservice Training Academy, Star Career Academy of NY, Fed Cap Academy, New York City College of Technology, and the Culinary Institute of America.
