NYIT Students Know No Borders

Dubai, U.A.E. (April 4, 2011) – NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., joined six NYIT students at the 2011 Education Without Borders (EWB) conference in the United Arab Emirates from March 28—31.  The biennial event served as a networking hub for more than 1,000 students and practitioners seeking to use education and technology to achieve sustainable development, greener business models, and student success the world over.

Dhirar Al-Mukhtar, Christopher Jewth, Elyas Kashfi, Margarita Koutsouras, Jonathan Pekor, and Valerie Suttenberg -- representing NYIT campuses in Old Westbury, Amman, and Bahrain – attended as conference delegates after a highly competitive selection process. The students shared their ideas on alternative energy sources, humanitarian health initiatives, green engineering, and cloud computing with conference colleagues.

“If you put 1,000 people together who all have good intentions, then good things are going to happen,” said Pekor, a physical therapy student at NYIT-Old Westbury.

Conference highlights included an opening ceremony featuring Emirati culture with fireworks and a futuristic light show, a gala dinner, and an award ceremony hosted by H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, UAE and Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology.

“It was a great opportunity to be able to travel to one of the richest parts of the world in order to connect with other students of different cultures, yet similar educational backgrounds, and learn how they explore issues and solve problems,” added Jewth, who is studying mechanical engineering.

EWB hosts international thought leaders to be speakers and mentors to the students during the conference. This year, NYIT’s President Guiliano and First Lady Mireille Guiliano were among the 115 mentors in attendance.  Other mentors included The Right Honorable Tony Blair, CNN Hero Evan Wadongo, and WWF International President Yolande Kakabadse.
