NYIT Students Connect to Celebrate Service Efforts around the World

The event connected students on all NYIT campuses including Abu Dhabi; Bahrain; Jordan; Nanjing, China; Vancouver, Canada; and Manhattan and Old Westbury in New York. Speaking at the event, Robert Hammarberg, the president of the NYIT-Old Westbury Student Government Association, said,  “The reason we are here today is to increase our awareness of how important service to our communities is and how, as a whole, NYIT has a tremendous impact on others. We have much to be proud of and celebrate, and it is up to us to continue to inspire change.”

Via prepared remarks, photo sharing, general conversation, and various comments, participating NYIT students shared details of service efforts that collectively represent dozens of projects and thousands of hours of service performed by hundreds of NYIT volunteers, including alumni, to the benefit of many organizations around the world. Efforts ranged from spearheading natural disaster relief and food drives to youth engagement, from visiting hospital to hosting blood drives and fundraisers, and from staffing crisis hotlines and technology help centers to raising awareness for health and wellness issues.

Francy Magee, the dean of Campus Life at NYIT-Old Westbury, noted: “Today’s event was developed collaboratively with representatives from each global campus. Experiential learning, including service, is a critical and valuable extension of students’ NYIT education and will serve them well in their time at the university, in their chosen professions, and in their lives as valued and productive members of society.  We are extremely proud of the service work our students are contributing in their communities to help solve public problems and make the world a better place for all.”
