NYIT Shows Appreciation for Local Police

(Old Westbury, NY) -- Members of the Old Westbury and Old Brookville Police Departments were applauded for their dedication, service, and bravery at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Police Appreciation Day on Wednesday, April 24, 2013.

“For the past couple of years, NYIT has enjoyed this opportunity to honor our local police departments and officers for the fine work they do in our local communities,” said NYIT Vice President for Financial Affairs Leonard Aubrey. Members of the local community and NYIT administration also attended the event at the NYIT de Seversky Mansion on the university’s Old Westbury campus.

Individual awards (listed below) were presented by restaurateur Gillis Poll and Banfi Vineyards CEO Bob Whiting, both of whom reside in nearby communities. Awardees included:

NYIT Old Brookville Police Awards:

Outstanding Recognition Award: Police Officer Thomas Steinwall, a 15-year veteran, was granted this recognition for his extraordinary and heroic efforts in attempting to save a drowning victim.

Distinguished Service Award: Lieutenant James McCarty was recognized for his excellence and long-time dedication in serving the community and in serving as a mentor to younger officers.

Honorable Mention Award: Police Officer Shaun McKee, described by Old Brookville Police Chief Richard Smith as someone with “all the fine qualities of a true law enforcement professional: honesty, integrity, intuition, flexibility, motivation, and teamwork.”

NYIT Old Westbury Police Awards:

Outstanding Recognition Award: Police Officer Kenneth Gass, described by Old Westbury Police Chief Dan Duggan as a “highly motivated police officer whose proactive approach to patrol yields outstanding results,” has led the department in arrests and summonses for the past two years.

Distinguished Service Award: Sgt. Frank Guinan was recognized as a dedicated, hardworking, loyal member of the Old Westbury Police Department, with “a great enthusiasm for the job” and being “well respected by the members of the department.”

Honorable Mention Award: Police Officer Thomas Gorman was recognized for his skill, knowledge, willingness to assist, and for his self-motivation in continually exploring new ways to improve the department and keeping up to date with new technology and equipment.

Additional Recognitions: Detective Michael Lynch, Police Officer James Campbell, and Police Officer Kevin Gaskin were recognized individually for their response and life-saving actions. All three performed CPR, along with AED shocks on unconscious, unresponsive cases, all of whom are alive today due to the immediate, decisive actions of these officers.

Members of the police departments in attendance also participated in a raffle, with generous prizes donated by Brookville Country Club, Paul’s Nursery, Banfi Vineyards, and the North Shore Long Island Rotary.
