NYIT Selected as 'RemaiNY' Venue

New York State Assemblyman Rob Walker to Discuss New York 'Brain Drain'

Old Westbury, N.Y. ( March 24, 2009) -New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) has been selected as a venue for one of New York State Assemblyman Rob Walker's 'RemaiNY' forums, exploring issues surrounding the exodus of young people from the state of New York.

Walker invites NYIT students to join him to discuss their experiences of trying to stay in, or reasons for leaving, New York. The event will take place on Monday, April 13 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Department of Athletics Hall of Fame Lobby at NYIT's Old Westbury campus.

"For many years, New York has faced the flight of its young people from their homes. Often called the 'brain drain', this phenomenon is especially acute among college graduates and young professionals. Living in New York has become prohibitively expensive in most areas, and the affordable areas are often experiencing economic hardships," says Walker, who represents New York's 15th Assembly District. The district includes most of the inland "Gold Coast" communities, Hicksville, Salisbury, parts of East Meadow, New York Institute of Technology, Long Island University's C.W. Post Campus, SUNY Old Westbury, Broadway Mall, and most of Eisenhower Park.

Walker continues, "Without your input, especially regarding these tough times, we cannot craft adequate and appropriate solutions to these problems. For students, they will most likely graduate at the end of this economic downturn: how do they plan to engage with the new, probably scaled-back economy? For young professionals: how are they weathering the storm and what lessons are they learning regarding their careers and personal finances? Our goal is to stop this 'brain drain' by providing solutions that will restore New York's ability to retain our best and brightest in this generation, and for generations to come."

Clyde Doughty, Jr., NYIT's director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation, is providing event coordination and encourages students to join the Assemblyman at the April 13 event. "This is a tangible way that students can make an impact on their future and the future of our area," says Doughty.
