NYIT Remembers 9/11

Old Westbury and New York, N.Y. (Sept. 9, 2011) – With events including a film about artists, a candlelight vigil, and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, NYIT marks the ten-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Students will gather at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 11 to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to share memories and thoughts as a community.

The commemoration started this summer, when NYIT’s fine arts professor Peter Voci unveiled his 9/11 memorial at the Applied Science Center of Innovation and Excellence in Homeland Security in Bethpage, N.Y.  Voci salvaged an American flag, a missing firefighter’s helmet and radio, and a chunk of steel girder for his display.

On Monday, Sept. 12, Jacqueline Taylor Basker, associate professor of fine arts at NYIT-Amman, is showing her film “Aftermath: 9/11 and New York Artists” at New Jersey City University’s group show, “Afterwards & Forwards: A ten-year 9/11 reflective art exhibition,” featuring the works of 18 international artists including Yoko Ono. The event will be held at 5 p.m. at the Visual Arts Gallery, located at 100 Culver Avenue in Jersey City, N.J.

In addition, NYIT students are designing a 9/11 memorial that will be displayed at a site in Myrtle Beach, S.C. New York City firefighters donated part of a steel beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center to be used in the memorial.

As a tribute to all of those who were lost and those who have rose in service to America, NYIT has organized events for the community.
