New York, N.Y. (May 6, 2011) – Amid frenzied bidding for food and travel packages, NYIT raised more than $375,000 for student scholarships at its Gold Coast Classic.

At the May 5 event, NYIT and co-sponsor Quarterly Review of Wines honored Barbara Lynch, chef and CEO of Barbara Lynch Gruppo, and Michael Martini, master winemaker of Louis M. Martini Winery for their innovations and accomplishments in the food and wine industry.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., told the more than 200 guests at the Ritz Carlton in Manhattan’s Battery Park that their support can help students transform distant goals into celebrated achievements.

Mechanical engineering student Christopher Jewth told the audience how he’d looked for a way to get involved in university life after being sidelined from athletics because of an injury. He found his answer in the basement of Harry Schure Hall, where he first joined the Society of Automotive Engineers in building an off-road recreational vehicle from the ground up. Today, as the society’s president and member of the Student Government Association, he’s taken advantage of NYIT grants and scholarships to attend a range of academic conferences and service projects in places from Lake Buena Vista, Florida to Oworobong, Ghana.

“I am proud to say that I was smart enough to take part in many of NYIT’s amazing opportunities that have allowed me to explore my intellectual interests and understand the world,” he said.

President Guiliano thanked the crowd for donations, saying “you are giving students opportunities to give back, even while they are taking full course loads.” He cited architecture students who traveled to the Dominican Republic to build new schools, and students who raised more than $16,000 to travel to Peru during spring break in order to help communities provide clean water to residents.

The audience enjoyed a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, and a three-course dinner paired with wine specially selected by Michael Martini.
