Old Westbury, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2010) – New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) has established an innovative outdoor fitness center at its Old Westbury campus with the help of alumnus Roy Arad (B.S. ‘07) and international play and fitness equipment company Games & Sports.
The outdoor center features seven resistance training machines near NYIT’s Sports Complex that allow users to burn calories and increase muscle tone. The machines, which include a pull-down trainer, elliptical cross trainer, rowing machine, wab board, fitness bicycle, rider, and butterfly machine, emulate workout equipment found inside gyms and fitness centers.
“The outdoor fitness center will allow individuals in the NYIT community who love the outdoors the opportunity to fit in a circuit of fitness exercises during their walk or run,” said Clyde Doughty, director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation at NYIT.
Coaches in NYIT’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation have begun to incorporate the equipment into fitness programs for student-athletes. Doughty also hopes to work with NYIT’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) and School of Health Professions to create a rehabilitation program that utilizes the equipment, as well as a tailored workout program for students, faculty, and staff to complement a balanced eating plan.
"As an alumnus of NYIT, I am pleased to have the opportunity to give back to the college that taught me so much and helped to get me where I am today,” said Arad, the vice president of business development at Arocon Consulting, where he manages all U.S. operations for Games & Sports.
New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in more than 90 fields of study, including architecture and design; arts and sciences; education; engineering and computing sciences; health professions; management; and osteopathic medicine. A non-profit independent, private institution of higher education, NYIT has more than 15,000 students attending campuses on Long Island and Manhattan, online, and at its global campuses. Led by President Edward Guiliano, NYIT is guided by its mission to provide career-oriented professional education, offer access to opportunity to all qualified students, and support applications-oriented research that benefits the larger world. To date, 85,000 graduates have received degrees from NYIT. For more information, visit nyit.edu.
