NYIT Hosts U.S. Navy "Top Gun"

Admiral Robert F. Willard, commander of U.S. Pacific CommandNew York, NY (Mar. 30, 2011)New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) will host Admiral Robert F. Willard, commander of U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM), as he discusses “Security in the Asia-Pacific: Strategic Challenges and Opportunities,” on Thursday, April 7, 2011, in New York City.

Over the past two years China’s naval presence in the Asia-Pacific has been a source of tension for both neighboring countries and the United States. Then, in the same month that the Chinese government proposed to increase its military spending by 13% over the previous year, natural disasters threatened the safety and economies of millions.

Experts agree that the Asia-Pacific security landscape is changing in ways that will affect the rest of the world for years to come.

Admiral Robert F. Willard has been the Commander of PACOM since October 2009. From May 2007 to October 2009, he was commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and, prior to that, he was the 34th vice chief of naval operations. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he received a master’s degree in engineering management from Old Dominion University. He is an alumnus of MIT's Seminar XXI, an educational program for senior military officers, government and NGO officials, and executives in the national security policy community, designed to give future leaders the advanced analytical tools required to understand and evaluate the myriad factors that affect foreign policy decisions.

Willard was also the aerial coordinator for the 1986 movie Top Gun and appeared on film, piloting an enemy aircraft against "Goose" and "Maverick."

Moderated by National Committee on United States-China Relations (NCUSCR) President Stephen Orlins, Admiral Willard will address the current security situation in Asia, with special focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by China’s rise.

This event is co-sponsored by the NCUSCR and the College of Arts and Sciences of NYIT
