NYIT Encourages All to Relay for Life

Old Westbury, N.Y. (March 14, 2011) – More than 250 students, staff, faculty, and friends are raising thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society as part of NYIT’s third annual Relay for Life. The event will be held on Friday, April 29, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the President’s Stadium in Old Westbury.

NYIT participants will camp out on the field for 24 hours, and take turns walking and running around the track throughout the night. They will join communities around the world who organize local Relay for Life events to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones, and support research to fight the disease.

The overnight event symbolizes the fact that cancer never sleeps.

“The students here are passionate about community service and fighting cancer,” said Michael Burnett, NYIT’s associate dean for campus life. He noted that Relay for Life has become a welcomed tradition among the students, bringing family, friends, and the NYIT community together to work towards the goal of fighting cancer.

“Join Team Burnett!,” he added.

More than 40 teams will participate, including groups from the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, School Counseling Program, Community Service Center, Student Government Associations, WNYT Radio, community groups, and other organizations and departments at NYIT.
