NYIT Cheers Achievements of NYIT-Bahrain Class of 2012

NYIT-Bahrain graduate Hala Alawiat accepts her degree from NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D.

“The degree that I will confer on you is respected the world over,” said NYIT President Edward Guiliano, congratulating the students on their achievements. “It is your business passport to the 21st-century global economy.”

“The confidence that comes with education—no one can take that away from you, and I think it’s a bright future for everyone who graduated,” said new graduate Nusser Iftikhar, who was among students who formed the cast and crew of the NYIT-Bahrain student-produced film Silveraven, which premiered at the Seef Mall Cineplex last month. Supervised by NYIT Assistant Professor of Fine Arts and Computer Graphics Zeeshan J. Shah, student director Samar Osama Karkar led the team of 15 in the shooting of the project as well as the pre- and post-production process.

“Samar used to dig deep into the philosophy of arts and always wanted to do something never done before,” said Shah. “With her great efforts, she showed the whole region that there are young talents in the world who can go beyond their abilities and motivate others to do the same.” While Silverraven played to sold-out audiences in Bahrain, the importance of community and service was not lost on the NYIT filmmaking team, according to Karkar. “The point of making the movie was to give the proceeds to the charity the Red Crescent,” she said.

“We wanted to give to our country,” added lead actress Hala Alawiat. “When we were younger we were always raised up in a way that whatever we get we have to give back—even if you get something small, you have to give back 10 times as much, it’s just a way of showing compassion.”

At today’s ceremony, student leadership representatives Tareq Al Kendi and Samar Mohammed, graduate student speakers Mai Al- Khalifa and Abeer Al- Aradi and undergraduate student speakers Mohammed Abdulla and Abeer Al- Najran, delivered the annual student addresses to their fellow graduates.

NYIT Board Chair Linda Davila, NYIT Chief of Staff Peter Kinney III, and NYIT Director of Alumni Relations Jennifer Kelly also attended the ceremony.

The graduation ceremony followed NYIT’s 51st commencement, which celebrated 3,325 graduates on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Old Westbury, New York campus. In addition to its campuses in the Middle East, NYIT also has campuses in Canada, China, and Manhattan.
