Nanjing, China (10 June 2014) ─ On a warm morning, NYIT-Nanjing’s 321 members of the Class of 2014 received their degrees today before a crowd of relatives, friends, and faculty. They join a worldwide network of NYIT alumni numbering nearly 100,000.

Graduates and supporters met on the grounds of NYIT partner Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT). NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., conferred bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration - International Business; Communication Arts; Electrical and Computer Engineering; and Computer Science. Many graduates will pursue further education at NYIT, NUPT, and other top universities in China, the U.S., and other countries. Others have secured jobs in Jiangsu Province’s thriving economy and in nearby Shanghai. In addition, several Nanjing-based students who spent their senior year in New York accepted jobs in the U.S.

President Guiliano’s address to the graduates stressed the importance of establishing human connections in addition to ever-present technological connectivity. "Employers like Google and Huawei, where some of you have been hired, seek more than technical skills. They need people who can learn quickly and synthesize different bits of information. They want employees who can work in teams, but are also 'emergent leaders.' And even leaders need the humility to embrace ideas better than their own. Your education has helped you to develop the skills you will need to succeed, both personally and professionally."student at podium

Other speakers at the ceremony included NUPT President Yang Zhen, Ph.D.; NYIT Board of Trustees Chair Linda Davila ('78); Dean Zong Ping, Ph.D., of NUPT's College of Overseas Education; and Acting Consul General Mark Tesone of the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai. Executive Director for NYIT China/Nanjing Campus Dean Monique Taylor served as master of ceremonies at the event.

"We graduates gathering here are imbued with honor and gratitude. To our 'alma maters,' Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications and New York Institute of Technology, thanks for your foresight and sagacity," she said in her speech.

NYIT-Nanjing’s graduation ceremony followed NYIT’s 53rd Commencement at Old Westbury, N.Y., which celebrated 3,114 worldwide graduates on May 18. Many Nanjing-based graduates who studied in New York took part on this occasion. In other ceremonies, NYIT-Vancouver honored its graduates on May 30, while NYIT-Abu Dhabi recognized its graduates on June 5.
