NYIT-Amman Celebrates Class of 2013

Amman, Jordan (May 31, 2013)  ΜΆ  Family, friends, and faculty cheered 177 graduates of the Class of 2013 at New York Institute of Technology’s graduation ceremony in Amman.

“You’ll enjoy opportunities that first appear in the corner of your eye,” said NYIT President Edward Guiliano, who congratulated students and conferred degrees. “You’ll have wonderful experiences, and meet fascinating people…Think of your NYIT degree as your passport to the world – and the future.”

Graduate student speaker Osama Al-Rebi and undergraduate student speakers Sara Zubeidi and Farah Ammari delivered the annual student addresses.

In his keynote address, Guiliano stressed that graduates’ investment in higher education would lead to prosperity both personally and professionally, and emphasized the value of connectedness in the networked 21st century.

“No one moves in a straight line in a network; you move from one node to the next,” he said. “You turn corners and often find surprises. Wrong turns can lead to the right endings. The more connections you have, the more paths open up and the richer your life becomes. NYIT has given you a wealth of these connections,” he stated.

“Jordan’s culture of entrepreneurship is growing,” he added. “Much of that has to do with gains in information and communications technology…No doubt this will open up opportunities for graduates. With your degree and critical thinking skills, you are well-positioned to take advantage of your country’s entrepreneurial growth and innovation.”

In the days prior to the ceremony, several graduates reflected on their time at NYIT.

Graduate Ola Khawaja said she “loved every single moment” of her NYIT education and credits it with leading to her next step; a graphic design internship at the American embassy in Jordan. Following the internship, she plans to apply for jobs at some large companies in the information technology field.

“I want to start big to be great,” she said. “A great job with my own business on the side would be my heaven on earth.”

Zeina Shafaqoj, another graduate, said her NYIT education "helped me use critical thinking rather than wishful thinking, and it also helped me grow as an individual."

Graduate Samya Alakhdar said: "NYIT gives us a sophisticated type of education in which we develop our technical , conceptual , behavior skills." Alakhdar said she has a competiive advantage in building a career strategy in the field of crediti analysis.

NYIT Board Chair Linda Davila (B.S., '78) and NYIT Director of Alumni Relations Jennifer Kelly (M.S., '99) also attended the ceremony.

The graduation ceremony followed NYIT’s 52st commencement, which celebrated 3,215 graduates on Sunday, May 19, 2012, at the Old Westbury, New York campus. In addition to its campuses in the Middle East, NYIT also has campuses in Canada, China, and Manhattan.
