Medical and Health Professions Students Attend Convocation

NYCOM and SOHP Convocation

Old Brookville, N.Y.  (September 18, 2012) – The theme of “clinical quality in a changing world” dominated the recent student convocation for medical and health professions students, with guest speakers stressing the need for medical professionals to listen to patients and work together for their optimal care.
Recipients of the Riland Medal for Public Service, named in honor of former medical school trustee and co-founder W. Kenneth Riland, D.O., included patient advocate Sorrel McElroy King, health policy expert Robert Blancato, public health physician Eric Baumgartner, M.D., and Felix Rogers, D.O.
“Keep your focus on the patient,” Rogers said to the audience of students, faculty members, and family gathered at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post to mark the start of their professional education. “Hang on to that patient like bulldog.”
King, whose 18-month-old daughter Josie died in 2001 as a result of medical errors, cautioned the students to “remember the patient, remember the family, and listen to each other.” King created the Josie King Foundation to help inspire a safer healthcare system.
Blancato advised the students to “share all aspects of your wealth, from the material to the intellectual, beyond yourself” while Baumgartner urged them to nurture leadership skills, commit to excellence and humility, and support each other as members of a caring clinical team.
The convocation for more than 650 students at New York Institute of Technology’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Health Professions featured NYIT President Edward Guiliano’s announcement of Dr. Wolfgang Gilliar, D.O. as the new dean for the medical school effective January 1, 2013.  (See related story.)
Guiliano told the students that NYIT’s strength and philosophy is reflected in its commitment to diversity, idea incubation, globalism, technology, aspiration, and leadership.
“We understand the view that living and working effectively in a global society requires learning with a transcultural perspective and developing cultural competence so you will be able to deliver patient-centered healthcare,” he said.
The convocation also featured Standard of Excellence Awards for 16 professors, administrators, and instructors as well as the six faculty members of the NYIT Center for Global Health.
