Brazil Sends STEM Students to NYIT

New York, N.Y. (24 June 2014)  –  Forty-nine new students arrived at NYIT today from several Brazilian universities, part of a scholarship program funded by Brazil’s government to send up to 100,000 young Brazilians to study for a year at top universities around the world. Through the efforts of the provost's office, the students have come to study fields related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This group is the first of three cohorts expected at NYIT for fall and spring semesters, 2014-15.

At a morning orientation meeting, the group learned about their English classes, collected textbooks, and got tips about free summer activities in New York. Felipe Aguiar (age 22), who studies at the Catholic University of Brasilia in Brazil, is excited about his upcoming year.

“NYIT is a good university,” Felipe said, “and New York is a good place to live. I look forward to new opportunities to learn English, to carry out research in my field, and to make new contacts from many places.” Admitting that his family will miss him, he added, “They want to come here to travel, too.”students collecting textbooks

Students accepted to study at NYIT have a good foundation in English. Nevertheless, most will study an intensive academic English course before beginning regular NYIT courses.

“After studying at NYIT for an academic year, most of these students will also do a summer internship before returning to Brazil,” said Julie Fratrik, director of NYIT’s Center for Global Academic Exchange.
