NYIT Students Recognized for Accomplishments in Human Resources

Colleen Herihy, Archana Srinivasan, and Kristen Fricione

Old Westbury, N.Y. (July 14, 2010) –
New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) students received various accolades for their involvement in NYIT’s Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapter and human resources and labor relations coursework.

Led by Richard Dibble, Ph,D., chairperson of the Department of Human Resources Management and Law and executive director of the Center for Human Resources Studies, SHRM received the national organization’s Student Chapter Superior Merit Award, which recognizes outstanding achievements in chapter operations and a commitment to providing meaningful programs and services to members.

In addition, individual students were recognized for their involvement in SHRM, as well as in NYIT’s human resources management and labor relations program. SHRM President Kristen Fricione (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) won the Long Island SHRM’s Matt Halpern Memorial Scholarship Award for $2,000. Fricione, who will graduate in December 2010 with a master’s degree in human resources management and labor relations, was selected for her leadership skills, classroom achievements, and involvement in the chapter.

Recent graduate Archana Srinivasan (M.S. ’10) garnered the SHRM’s NYC (HR/NY) Sherman Award and a $1,000 scholarship granted to a student of human resources management who has been active and supportive of the student SHRM chapter. Srinivasan (Queens, N.Y.), SHRM’s former vice president and the first NYIT student to receive this award, was formally honored at HR/NY’s breakfast meeting on June 16.

Colleen Herlihy (Farmingdale, N.Y.), SHRM’s current vice president, won the Long Island Labor and Employee Relations Association (LI-LERA) scholarship for $1,000. Herlihy is expected to graduate in December 2010 with a master’s degree in human resources management and labor relations.

“Only one in four chapters nationally achieves the Superior Merit Award,” said Dibble. “We are very proud of the achievements of our student leaders who not only stand out individually, but who have also helped NYIT’s SHRM gain national recognition.”

Under the leadership of these students, the chapter conducted seminars, organized two charity drives, provided scholarships to NYIT students, and arranged for students to attend professional conferences and networking events.
