New York, N.Y. (March 2, 2011) – Scholars will explore the history and changing role of Latino cultures at New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) interdisciplinary conference on Friday, March 4, 2011, in New York City.
The conference will examine the ways in which Latino immigration is reshaping New York and other cities, the marketing and branding of Latino identity, and comparisons of the city to other major metropolises.
Presenters will come from as far away as Argentina, Hawaii, and Spain. Keynote speakers include Laura Lomas, associate professor in the Department of English Literature and graduate school faculty member at Rutgers University; Jose Muñoz, chair and professor of performance studies at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University; Claudio Remeseira, writer, journalist, and director of the Hispanic New York Project of the American Studies Program at Columbia University; and Carmelita Tropicana, Cuban-born performance artist, playwright, and actor.
“Latino Cultures of New York City” is the seventh interdisciplinary conference sponsored by NYIT’s College of Arts and Sciences. Admission is free for students and the community. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the New Technology Building, located at 16 W. 61st Street, in the 11th floor auditorium.
