NYIT Education Experts Discuss Student Learning

NYIT School of Education faculty and State Senator Carl Marcellino
Old Westbury, N.Y.  (January 27, 2012)  ΜΆ  NYIT education experts schooled Long Island teachers and administrators today about the importance of helping students overcome learning challenges and achieve academic success.

A School of Education-sponsored conference at NYIT’s de Seversky Mansion featured in-depth discussions of the educational practice known as RTI, or Response to Intervention.  RTI is used to help educators decide if students are learning and, if not, the kind of instructional assistance they may need.   John Kappenberg, an adjunct associate professor of education and Dolores Burton, associate professor and chair of the Teacher Education Program, recently authored “The Complete Guide to RTI, An Implementation Toolkit.”

“This is a major shift in the way education works,” Kappenberg told a group of 40 teachers and administrators.  “This is not just an educational fad.”

Burton noted that teachers want to teach their students effectively so “what we need to do as educators is give them the tools.”  RTI, she said, uses data to help schools make decisions about educational interventions that may help students.

In his keynote address, State Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R-5th District), a former New York City high school teacher and administrator, said he would continue supporting effective educational initiatives even in the face of budget crunches at all levels of government.

“Every child has a right to learn,” said Marcellino, who recounted a story of how he helped struggling students by encouraging them to work in groups and solve problems together. “It’s a right, not a privilege.  Our job as teachers is to figure out how they do it.”

He urged teachers and administrators to “lead the charge for change” to help their students.

“Setting up a scientific method to evaluate kids and figure out a plan for them…is what every good teacher does in the classroom,” Marcellino said.
