Mayor of the City of Wuxi, China Tours NYIT

Old Westbury, NY (Feb. 16, 2012) —Marking another step in its plan to enhance global education, New York Institute of Technology welcomed 17 Chinese delegates to its New York campuses on Tuesday. Led by Mayor Zhu Keijiang of the Wuxi Municipal Government, the delegation included Deputy President Song Xuefeng and Deputy Director Wang Wenjie, representatives from NYIT’s collaborative partner China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT), one of China’s elite universities. The visit included discussions to explore mutually beneficial joint ventures embraced by the city with NYIT, CUMT, and industry.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., greeted the Chinese delegates at NYIT’s Old Westbury campus, where they toured NYIT’s science, medical research, patient simulation, architecture, motion capture, and distance learning labs. The group discussed their next steps toward developing a series of joint-degree and short-study programs for students and faculty in New York and China, as well as the possibility of creating an international college in Wuxi, a prosperous city of 6 million citizens located between Shanghai and Nanjing. The delegation concluded its Old Westbury visit with a luncheon at the NYIT de Seversky Mansion hosted by President Guiliano and attended by Robert Nederlander, Jr., president of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment. Later that afternoon, members of the delegation toured NYIT’s Manhattan campus located near Columbus Circle.

“We look forward to collaborating with our partners across nations and across cyberspace,” said President Guiliano. “Such partnerships empower students by offering educational opportunities that include international collaboration and cross-cultural experiences.”

Last year, President Guiliano and CUMT President Ge Shirong announced plans to jumpstart a cross-university exchange of academic materials, research methods, students, and faculty members. The universities are also exploring the establishment of an independent college in China with the approval of China’s Ministry of Education. In January 2012, the Wuxi Municipal Government invited President Guiliano and President Ge to explore joint programs in Wuxi in medicine, computer graphics, architecture, engineering, and arts management.
