Paleontology Expert Interviewed for Dinosaur Evolution Story

As seen in Defector, evolutionary biologist Aki Watanabe, Ph.D., assistant professor of anatomy, rebutted new findings that claim T.rex fossils represent multiple species of dinosaur, and that the T.rex should, therefore, be split into multiple species.

“Almost half of the T. rex specimens they used in the original paper are owned privately or commercially,” says Watanabe, who was not involved with the study. As he notes, relying on so many privately owned fossils, which are not guaranteed to be accessible to all scientists, is generally “frowned upon in the dinosaur or paleontology community,” as this practice goes against one of the fundamental aspects of science: that all studies should be replicable.

The Freeport Herald published an article highlighting the academic successes of recent New York Tech graduate and Freeport native Michael Valenzuela (B.S. ’22). In the interview, Valenzuela recounts his experience as a computer science major and notes the valuable experience he gained by working in the Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation Center (ETIC).

Media Feature Expert’s Research on Psychological Safety as Innovation Enabler

Research published by Radoslaw Nowak, Ph.D., about the role of psychological safety as an internal resource that managers could leverage to support a firm’s capabilities to innovate, is featured in an interview in Associations Now.

“Psychological safety can improve a firm’s ability to continuously improve their processes,” Nowak said. “So, psychological safety is critical because it allows firms to identify a broader pool of process-improvement ideas. When employees feel that they can express themselves safely in their workplace, they will be collectively able to identify a broader pool of new ideas.”

Nowak’s research was also featured in B2B News Network and  Communications of the ACM.

 

CNBC Publishes Henao Op-ed

A CNBC op-ed by Dean of Students Felipe Henao, Ed.D., calls for college administrators to take a page out of corporate America's playbook and start making customer service a top priority for higher education. He writes that just as customer bases evolve over time, so do student bodies. Yet higher ed has failed to keep up. 

He suggests looking to Disney and other companies, including Zappos, for customer service insight. Henao also urged colleges to identify new ways to remove barriers to student success. “Since student bodies across many college campuses are incredibly diverse, it should be a mandate to deliver services that meet their unique needs -- just as companies do with their customers,” he writes.

Rajnarayanan Shares Insight on COVID-19 in Animals

Rajendram Rajnarayanan, Ph.D., assistant dean of research and associate professor at NYITCOM-Arkansas, was recently interviewed regarding the spread of COVID-19 in animals. His insight was featured in Fortune, Yahoo News, and other sites. As the coverage notes, Rajnarayan created and maintains a number of COVID-19 data dashboards, including one that is populated with data from an international research organization that tracks changes in COVID-19 and the flu virus in animals.

While the majority of globally identified animal cases have been in mink, deer, and pets like cats and dogs, Rajnarayanan notes that the virus has also crossed into the avian population. He explains that this could have “big implications,” including new mutations, extensive spread of the virus, and impacts on food supply. Given this, he recommends that the U.S. Department of Agriculture facilitate more frequent testing of farm animals and provide protective gear for farmers to reduce the likelihood of transmission from farmers to farm animals, and vice versa.

 

Infectious Disease Physician Quoted in Health Magazine

Epidemiologist and infectious disease expert Carl Abraham, M.D., assistant professor of clinical sciences at NYITCOM-Arkansas, was quoted in Health magazine regarding the impact of monkeypox on children. Abraham notes that, as with other diseases, neonates, or extremely young children in their first weeks of life, are likely vulnerable because of their weaker immune systems. However, he adds that it's hard to know for sure how severely they may be affected because of the small number of confirmed cases in children currently.

 

Italian Media Covers SoAD Delegation Visit to Peccioli

On July 18, a delegation from the School of Architecture and Design visited the model landfill of the town of Peccioli, in Italy, as part of a collaboration on Resilient Communities.  Italian media covered the delegation’s visit.  Peccioli, in the heart of Tuscany, was recently nominated as the small Italian capital of contemporary art; the School of Architecture and Design has been invited to carry out a series of activities aimed at further fostering the impact of Peccioli's initiatives on sustainable regeneration.

 

Nizich Adds Expertise on Using Chaos Testing to Stabilize Cybersecurity

Communications of the ACM quoted Michael Nizich, Ph.D., director of the ETIC and adjunct associate professor of computer science, in the article “Defending the Enterprise,” about how organizations use cybersecurity chaos experiments to simulate events to uncover deficits and then repair or rearchitect as needed to improve their resilience to attack.

"The most worrisome of modern cyberattacks with the most chaotic outcomes is an IoT attack rendering thousands of medical devices and even implants to work improperly or not at all," Nizich said, citing that among the disruptive cyberattacks of a more significant concern than ransomware.
