Forty-eight students in the Class of 2012’s Physician Assistant Studies program traded waist-length jackets for long white coats as they celebrated their new career just two days before NYIT’s commencement. Read more.

With spirited whoops and cheers, family members and friends celebrated Thursday at the Department of Nursing’s Class of 2012 pinning ceremony, marking the achievements of 20 graduates who will soon take licensing exams on their way to becoming registered nurses. Read more.

Congrats to Larry Herman, associate professor and director of physician assistant (PA) admissions and primary care initiatives, who has been elected president of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), the only organization representing PAs globally and in all specialties and practice settings. It is the national equivalent of the American Medical Association for M.D.s or the American Osteopathic Association for D.O.s
The AAPA advocates and educates on behalf of the profession; works to ensure the professional growth, personal excellence, and recognition of PAs; and is dedicated to enhancing their ability to improve the quality, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness of patient-centered health care. Currently, there are nearly 100,000 PAs and PA students and the profession is expected to double in size in the next decade.
The School of Health Professions inducted 39 students into the Alpha Eta Honor Society, celebrating their academic achievement and leadership in clinical nutrition, mental health, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and physician assistant programs. These students represent some of the best and the brightest in their respective fields,” said Patricia Chute, dean of the School of Health Professions. “Maintaining a GPA of 3.8 as a graduate student and a 3.5 as an undergraduate student is a huge accomplishment and demonstrates their dedication to their field and to scholarship.” Each student received an honors cord, a certificate, and a pin.
On March 8, 2012, Judith E. Deutsch, PT, Ph.D., presented her research entitled, VR and Interactive Video Gaming to Promote Mobility and Fitness Post-Stroke at the School of Health Professions Dean's Speaker Series. SHP faculty and students were in attendance to hear about Dr. Deutsch’s ground-breaking research. Dr. Deutsch is Professor and Director of the Research in Virtual Environments and Rehabilitation Sciences (Rivers) in the Doctoral Programs in Physical Therapy at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She is a leader in the field of neurologic rehabilitation with a focus on individuals post-stroke. Her current research includes the development and testing of virtual reality rehabilitation, and off-the shelf gaming systems, and motor imagery to improve functional mobility and use of evidence in physical therapist practice.
NYIT's Department of Nursing has pledged to support First Lady Michelle Obama's national initiative Joining Forces to educate America's future nurses to care for the nation's veterans, service members, and their families. U.S. veterans returning from war zones often deal with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, depression, and other clinical issues. Read more about the pledge.
Nursing and physician assistant students from the School of Health Professions practiced teamwork, communication skills and emergency room scenarios with NYCOM students on March 5 and March 12. Using mannequins in the labs of the Institute for Clinical Competence, the teams worked on “patients” who suffered heart attacks or had difficulty breathing. Students worked together to assess and treat the patients’ conditions, order tests, prescribe medications, and monitor vital signs.

A new Brown Bag Lunch Series on health, wellness, and aging topics will convene with its first session on Tuesday, March 13, 1-2 p.m. in Riland Auditorium, Old Westbury campus. The event, organized by the NYIT Center for Gerontology and Geriatrics, features Robert Schwalbe, Ph.D., a leading New York-based psychoanalyst and author of the book, Sixty, Sexy, and Successful: A Guide for Aging Male Baby Boomers.
Dr. Karen Friel and Dr. Cheryl hall presented their research on "Epidemiology of Injuries in the Elite Level Female High School Lacrosse Player" at APTA's Combined Sections Meeting in Chicago. Their findings show that these high school players have an injury pattern that is more comparable to that seen in the collegiate player than in their high school peers.
Technology and medicine converge in a YouTube video teaching diabetic patients how to painlessly inject insulin, as demonstrated by Larry Herman, associate professor and director of physician assistant admissions and primary care initiatives.

Dr. Howard Makofsky, Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at NYIT, recently visited the Paradise Orphanage in Burkina Faso, West Africa. Through his non-profit organization, Kaya's Kids, Inc., Dr. Makofsky and his family provided funding for the establishment of the orphanage in 2008, which is now the home of 120 West African children. Not only are the children's physical needs provided for, but there is also an elementary school on the campus in addition to having a registered nurse provide medical care on a monthly basis. Pictured with Dr. Makofsky is Mr. Len Veitch, a volunteer from Ontario, Canada and Mr. Georges Sawadogo, the builder and director of the Paradise Orphanage.
2nd year DPT student Jonathan Pekor has been selected as a delegate from NYIT to attend the Education Without Borders Conference in Dubai, UAE in March 2011. "This conference is a biennial international student conference that creates networks across cultures in order to understand, and generate solutions for, some of the world's greatest challenges. The conference achieves this end by engaging the world's most innovative students and leaders in the business, technology, education and humanitarian sector in a collaborative forum that culminates in a commitment to action." (EWB) Over 3700 applications were received.
3rd year Physical Therapy DPT student Christopher Estafanous was selected to be a student delegate at the New York Physical Therapy Association's Board of Directors meeting held in Troy, NY January 28-29, 2011.
The nursing department will now begin reviewing applications to the nursing program for the Fall 2011 semester. Prospective candidates are advised to review all admissions requirements before applying. Read more.
