An obsessive-compulsive disorder is marked by persistent, unwanted but irresistible obsessions or compulsions. The individual may, or may not, recognize that the obsessions or compulsions are excessive. Obsessions are persistent ideas, thoughts, or impulses that are unwanted and cause considerable anxiety. Compulsions are repetitive acts that are engaged in an as an attempt to reduce the anxiety.
