Depression - Resources From Counseling Services

National Institute of Mental Health describes Major Depressive Disorder

Depression is a mood disturbance characterized by persistent, recurring feelings of sadness. This may be experienced as emotional flatness, inability to find pleasure in activities that used to bring pleasure, or a feeling of helplessness and/or hopelessness.

There is a broad range of symptoms that may be experienced and can include the following:

  • neglect of responsibilities and appearance
  • difficulty concentrating or focusing
  • poor memory
  • irritability
  • pessimism
  • exaggerated self-blame or guilt
  • loss of self-esteem, withdrawal from family and friends
  • sleeping disturbance, such as early-morning wakefulness, sleeping too much or insomnia

Other symptoms may include:

  • chronic fatigue or lack of energy
  • unexplained physical complaints such as headaches, backaches, stomach pain, etc.
  • recurrent thoughts of death or recurrent suicide ideation
