Lot #18: Ultra Dinner – 1960s

The Stella Room, a private dining room at the legendary Le Cirque in Manhattan's Midtown East, will be the site of the 2012 Ultra Dinner, scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. Le Cirque Chef Craig Hopson will present his exceptional French cuisine in support of a dream selection of wines.

This year's Ultra Dinner, offered by Edward Guiliano, president of NYIT, is the ultimate expression of wines from the 1960s. Every vintage is spectacular; every producer is legendary; every wine is essence of greatness, antiquity, and everlasting youth. The 1969 Echezeaux (Domaine Leroy) is a marvel of balance and length, with slight browning at the rim: it inspires deep meditation and greater conversation, as great wines invariably do. The 1969 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was, according the man himself, the best wine he produced. It still shows some tannin and structure, and puts to rest the argument that California Cabernets don't age. Vega Sicilia is, uniquely and undeniably, Vegas Sicilia, and the 1968 Vega Sicilia Union is a rarity: a collector's dream and "an undisputed First Growth of Spain." The most dramatic example of the Nebbiolo grape is Barolo; no producer makes a better version than Pio Cesare and no wine better expresses its immortality than the highly concentrated 1964 Pio Cesare Barolo. The five-star 1962 Remoissenet Clos de Vougeot was glorious, deep, and mature in 2005, and this Grand Cru Burgundy still shows extraordinary fruit and depth. What better way to close the Ultra Dinner than with one of the greatest vintages of the 20th century? The 1961 Chateau Leoville-Las Cases is classic and stylish, with an extraordinary near-perfect ripeness and acidity. And because man … and woman … cannot live by red alone, to break up the monotony of one stellar red wine after another, the Ultra Dinner will be punctuated by Champagne, Champagne, and more Champagne!

  • 1969 Echezeaux (Domaine Leroy)
  • 1969 Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1968 Vega Sicilia Union
  • 1964 Pio Cesare Barolo
  • 1962 Remoissenet Clos de Vougeot
  • The 1961 Chateau Leoville-Las Cases
