Pre-College Summer Programs in New York City

NYIT Summer 2014 New York City Pre-College Experience

Choose from among our 2 or 4 week sessions!

 

Each Program includes everything needed for a rewarding and educational experience as well as an exciting and fun summer in the most culturally rich neighborhood of New York City:

  • Exciting Cultural Program: Includes visits to sites such as the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Coney Island, a NY baseball game, Times Square and Broadway shows, museums, Central Park, and beaches.
  • Fun Extracurricular Activities: Talent shows, movie nights, community service projects, shopping and more!
  • College Admissions Workshops:  Providing personalized guidance on the U.S. university admissions process.
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off, and all local transportation.
  • A Shared Room: In NYIT’s residence hall, with all local transportation and comprehensive health insurance included. Trained Resident Assistants and 24-hour staff supervision onsite. Rooms feature private bathroom, air-conditioning, TV and internet connection.
  • All Meals: Students will have the opportunity to try a variety of New York’s renowned cosmopolitan cuisine. Catered breakfasts, lunches and dinners will be served each day.
  • A chance to make lifelong friends from around the world!

Robot

Career Discovery in Technology and Engineering (2 week program)

Session I: June 14 - 28

Session II: July 6 - 19

 This fun and informative program provides insight into the very essence of the stimulating professions of information technology and engineering. For starters, you will run a number of guided, hands-on laboratory experiments in game development, robotics, and electronic music. The program includes:

  • field trips where you will explore 21st-century technologies in the heart of New York City.
  • guest speakers with years of experience sharing personal stories about the technology/ engineering workplace.
  • NYIT faculty and staff describing NYIT student life at NYIT (for those enrolled in our undergraduate programs).

Exploring Architecture in Manhattan (4 week program)

Session I: July 6 - August 2

This summer program takes place in design studios overlooking Central Park and Columbus Circle, in the heart of one of the world's most famous urban environments.

A series of morning workshops, reading seminars, guest lectures, walking tours, office visits, and exhibitions visits introduces students to design practice, theory, and history.

Afternoon sessions offer an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of design. This studio challenges students with abstract design problems while also building skills in architectural drawing, modeling, and presentation. The program culminates with a portfolio workshop that prepares students for future study in architecture.

Motion Capture

Fine Arts (2 week program)

Session I: July 6 - July 19

Session II: July 20 - August 2

Take your digital art portfolio to the next level by attending NYIT’s 2-week intensive pre-college workshop in the Fine Arts Department. This educational and fun workshop will give you insights into the professions of art, design, and technology. Under the guidance of our distinguished faculty and utilizing our state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest technologies, you will explore techniques of visual communication while producing hands-on, portfolio-ready artwork.

 
During this digital art production workshop you will:
 
   BRAND YOURSELF!
Conceptualize and use visual language to communicate messages and ideas clearly and effectively; merge traditional and digital tools to create powerful design solutions utilizing photography, illustration and typography. In this workshop, students will design a logo and overall identity for a potential client or for themselves. For inspiration, they will visit a professional design studio in New York City.
 
 CREATE MOTION
Collaborate in production teams to explore the complex workflow and dynamic interactivity of 3-Dimensional games. In this workshop, students will capture live motion through the use of our 3-D Motion Capture studio; animate and edit those movements using Autodesk Maya; and incorporate animated elements into a game environment using Unity 3D.
 



 

FILMMAKER'S BOOTCAMP - LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!  (2 Week Program)

Session I:  June 14- 28

Session II: July 6 - 19

Session III: July 20 - August 2

 

Shoot and edit a New York City film in the studio and on location in Central Park from beginning to end! Learn Visual and Special Effects on the computer and in the studio. Work with professional New York City Actors!  Tour a NYC industry studio.

 

Student film crews choose from a Murder Mystery, Crime Drama or Science Fiction script.  Plan it, shoot it, edit it, add effects, screen it on the final day and go home with a DVD of the your film crew’s creation. This is a hands-on, comprehensive, immersive program.  Bring your creativity and be ready for intense action and daily excitement!

 

 

English language

Intensive English Language Studies (2 or 4 week program)

Session I: June 14- 28

Session II: July 6 - 19

Session III: July 20 - August 2

Session IV: July 6 - August 2 ( 4 week)

 

Want to improve your English skills in a fun and relaxed environment without spending your whole day in a classroom?

This program will focus on developing and/or refining reading, writing, listening and speaking skills related to living in New York,  using lessons on American culture and field trips.  Students will spend the mornings in the classroom working on reading and writing, while afternoons will be devoted to fun yet educational walking tours of various NYC neighborhoods, where students will practice their listening and speaking skills. Study tours may include a visit to the 911 Memorial and NYC Water Taxi Ride and a trip to The Paley Center for Media (formerly The Museum of Television & Radio and The Museum of Broadcasting) and visits to the Lower East Side, Central park, Soho art galleries, and more!

Nanotechnology (2 week program)

Session I: August 3 - 16

This dynamic two-week course explores science and engineering concepts in nanotechnology. Students disocver how nanotech can be integrated into science, math, or technology classes. Students will investigate various topics using the college's clean room, physics labs, and laborotory equipment while being introduced to electronics and solid state physics. They will work on projects such as carbon nanostructures, nanoscale thin films, nanofilters, and nano devices. This is a terrific opportunity for studetns to engage in an environment of higher academia while exploring an exciting new arena in science!

(This program will take place on NYIT'S Old Westbury campus on Long Island. Daily round-trip transportation will be provided from Manhattan.)

Sample Daily Schedule for Students

9 - 10 a.m. Group breakfast
10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Seminar classes or study tours related to the subject theme. Depending on their program, students may be in an English language class, developing a video game, or on a class trip to the PS 1 Contemporary Arts Center in Queens.
12 - 1 p.m. Lunch break
3:30 - 6 p.m. Afternoon activities, including a trip to the Museum of Natural History's special exhibit, Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration, and a space show at the Hayden Planetarium.
6 - 9 p.m. Group dinner followed by a special workshop by NYIT's admissions staff, Want to study in the U.S.? A step-by-step guide to applying to college in the U.S.
9 p.m. NYIT staff accompany students back to NYIT's residence hall.

  • All students who will be at least 16 years old by the program start are invited to apply!

  • Participants will receive an official NYIT certificate of participation upon completion of the program.
  • Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents should apply for a tourist (B) visa to enter the United States.
