Pre-College Summer Program in New York City

NYIT Summer 2012 New York City Pre-College Experience
Saturday, July 7 - Saturday, August 18, 2012

 

Each Summer Program Includes:

  • A shared room in NYIT's residence hall on Manhattan's Upper West Side, with trained Resident Assistants (RA's) and 24-hour staff supervision onsite. Rooms feature private bathroom, air-conditioning, TV, and WiFi. Each floor has a shared kitchen.
  • All meals: Students will have the opportunity to sample a variety of New York's famous cosmopolitan cuisine. Each weekday morning, breakfast will be served at NYIT's Manhattan campus from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Catered group lunches and dinners will be served.
  • Comprehensive international insurance coverage from HTH Worldwide.
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off, and all local transportation.
  • Workshops providing personalized guidance on the U.S. university admissions process and applying for American internships.
  • An exciting extracurricular and cultural program, which may include visits to the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, Coney Island, a baseball game, Times Square and Broadways shows, museums, movies, concerts, Central Park, beaches, shopping, an international talent show, and more!

Robot

Career Discovery in Technology and Engineering

  • Choose a 2- or 4-week session:
  • Session I: July 7- July 21
  • Session II: July 21 - August 18

This fun and informative program provides insight into the very essence of the stimulating professions of information technology and engineering. For starters, you will run a number of guided, hands-on laboratory experiments in game development, robotics, and electronic music. The program includes:

  • field trips where you will explore 21st-century technologies in the heart of New York City.
  • guest speakers with years of experience sharing personal stories about the technology/ engineering workplace.
  • NYIT faculty and staff describing NYIT student life at NYIT (for those enrolled in our undergraduate programs).

Exploring Architecture in Manhattan

  • Choose one 4-week session:
  • Session I: July 7 - August 4
  • Session II: July 21 - August 18

This summer program takes place in design studios overlooking Central Park and Columbus Circle, in the heart of one of the world's most famous urban environments.

A series of morning workshops, reading seminars, guest lectures, walking tours, office visits, and exhibitions visits introduces students to design practice, theory, and history.

Afternoon sessions offer an intensive introduction to the fundamentals of design. This studio challenges students with abstract design problems while also building skills in architectural drawing, modeling, and presentation. The program culminates with a portfolio workshop that prepares students for future study in architecture.

Motion Capture

Video Game Design Motion Capture

  • Choose one 2-week session:
  • Session I: July 21 - August 4
  • Session II: August 4 - August 18

Students will learn how to create video games using NYIT's state-of-the-art, 3-D motion capture studio in a hands-on experience. Our studio is equipped with more than 30 cameras that perform motion capture by recording movements and translating them into digital models for many applications.

This program is offered at our Old Westbury campus. Daily transportation from/to Manhattan will be provided.

Launch Pad Entrepreneurship Program

  • Choose one 2-week session:
  • Session I: July 21 - August 4
  • Session II: August 4 - August 18

This fun program explores the dynamics of launching an entrepreneurial venture in the diverse and vibrant context of New York City. The theme for the 2012 Launch Pad Camp is Going Green! So, if you have an interest in being a green entrepreneur, come join similarly minded students and get immersed in green learning!

Highlights of the program include:

  • learning about skyscrapers and a visit to one of the tallest and greenest skyscrapers in the world
  • exploration of green environmental initiatives and their impact on animal habitats at places such as the Bronx Zoo and the Baltimore Aquarium.
  • experiencing a green tour business operation in New City and its bicycle tour in Central Park.
  • meeting green entrepreneurs and learning about new green ventures at a Manhattan green incubator
  • discovering how green initiatives that help humanity are being implemented worldwide at the United Nations
  • Using the NYIT Business Incubator resources
  • Finishing the program with a business plan for a green business

English language

Intensive English Language Studies*

  • Choose a 2- or 4-week session:
  • Session I: July 7 - July 21
  • Session II: July 21 - August 18

Want to improve your English skills in a fun and relaxed environment without spending your whole day in a classroom?

This program will focus on developing and/or refining reading, writing, listening and speaking skills related to living in New York,  using lessons on American culture and field trips. Students will tour the Museum of the City of New York and The Paley Center for Media (formerly The Museum of Television & Radio and The Museum of Broadcasting).

*Students who do not demonstrate proficiency in English must enroll in the 2-week session (July 7 - 21) prior to participating in one of the other NYIT summer programs. Other students may wish to enroll in the 4-week stand-alone program.

Sample Daily Schedule for Students:

8:30 - 10 a.m. Group breakfast served on NYIT's campus.
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Seminar classes or study tours related to the subject theme. Depending on their program, students may be in an English language class, developing a video game, on a class trip to the PS 1 Contemporary Arts Center in Queens, or on a hydroponic venture tour in Brooklyn.
1 - 2 p.m. Lunch break
3 - 6 p.m. Afternoon activities, including a trip to the Museum of Natural History's special exhibit, Beyond Planet Earth: The Future of Space Exploration, and a space show at the Hayden Planetarium.
6 - 9 p.m. Group dinner followed by a special workshop by NYIT's admissions staff, Want to study in the U.S.? A step-by-step guide to applying to college in the U.S.
9 p.m. NYIT staff accompany students back to NYIT's residence hall.
