Essay

Shirley Hershey will turn 94 years young on the Fourth of July!  There simply couldn't be a more fitting day to celebrate my grandmother or "Grammy" as we affectionately call her than on America's birthday.

Her striking red hair and pink lipstick pale in comparison from the energy and zest for life that surround Shirley like a halo.  Committed to a lifetime of healthy living, Shirley worked for years (until she was well into her 80s) at GNC Health Stores where she counseled customers on the value of diet, exercise, vitamins and good, clean living.

"Everything in moderation" is her motto and though she never denies herself a guilty pleasure, like a slice of cake at a party or a second trip to the buffet line at a holiday gathering, she eats healthfully each and every day, careful to take in enough water, vitamins and nutrients to support her active lifestyle.

The first to head to the dance floor at a family bar mitzvah, Shirley understands that the key to longevity is the ability to 'think young' and 'be active.'   It was she who taught me how to 'disco-dance' in the late 70's after all!

My Grammy can always be counted on for a positive and encouraging word.  There is nothing that you can share with her that she won't be able to help put into perspective...and a positive perspective at that.  "As long as you're healthy and happy, that's what counts," is one of her favorite expressions.

Every day I am grateful for the inspiration she provides to everyone she meets and especially to me.  I love and honor her not only because she is my grandmother, but because she is an example of a strong, intelligent, creative, vibrant woman who has lived and full, productive and meaningful life.

She is beyond deserving of this recognition.
