Essay

The individual I would like to nominate for the Vitality in Aging Contest is Manuela Menendez, my grandmother, who is 82 years old. It is simple for me to nominate my grandmother because she is one of the strongest individuals I know. Through the years, my grandmother has had multiple health issues and surgeries from breast cancer to a brain aneurysm with the most recent being a thoracic aortic aneurysm.  Although the aneurysm surgery was successful, it left my grandmother with a paralyzed vocal cord which resulted in the inability to eat solids or drink liquids. After two months in the hospital and a rehabilitation facility, my grandmother has made slow but steady progress. She has visited many doctors seeking second and third opinions as well as treatment options. As a result of hard work, therapy and great determination, my grandmother is on the road to recovery.  She is now able to drink thickened liquids and eat some pureed food.

Through all her health struggles, my grandmother has never felt sorry for herself or given up. Instead she continues to take care of herself, her husband and her home. She is always just a phone call away for her children and grandchildren.  In my eyes, my grandmother is an amazing person in every way and still has it all…beauty, courage, determination, a great sense of humor and endless devotion to her family. I am immensely grateful to have my grandmother in my life and can only hope to live my life the way she lives hers.
