The course introduces the student to the techniques, tools, and compositional structure used in traditional watercolor sketching. We will begin with a description of the materials and methods needed for watercolor sketching, including an introductory lecture on color theory. Then we will work with graphite, to form the rough framework of a watercolor sketch, studying elements of perspective representation: geometric breakdown of complex objects, shades, shadows, line weight, and direction, as well as composition of the sheet. This will be followed by a series of field sketches and watercolor paintings that proceed from monochrome to limited palette to full palette. We will be sketching buildings, as well as outdoor space both in short, timed expressions of form and in more detailed exercises.
