Tobi Abramson, Ph.D., was an associate professor at NYCOM until 1999, and returned in 2002, as an adjunct professor in the School of Health Professions. Now, she is a full-time assistant professor in the Mental Health Counseling Program.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Abramson is the director of NYIT’s Center for Gerontology and Geriatrics, where she initiates relationships with local, regional, national, and international leaders who have an interest in aging to develop partnerships and collaborations. She organizes conferences, supports the operation of the Faculty Associates program, and develops grant proposals.
She lectures frequently on a range of aging topics throughout the country, particularly caregiving, mental health of older adults, workforce issues, and creativity in later life. She has contributed to several articles for Newsday’s Act II section, and is working on a book on Family Therapy with older adults.
Among her other professional activities, she consults and conducts trainings for both the New York City and the Long Island Chapters of the Alzheimer’s Association, is the geriatric program coordinator at the Adult Developmental Center, and works with older adults and their families.
Abramson serves as president of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Creative Aging in Washington, D.C., and is active in many professional organizations, including the American Society on Aging, where she is on the Board of Directors. She serves on the editorial board of the Mental Health and Aging Network (MHAN), and has written numerous articles for this publication.
Abramson received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Fordham University, master’s degree in development psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University, and bachelor’s degree in psychology from Queens College.
