Biography
Steven Shapiro, Ph.D., oversees the Center for Risk Management at NYIT’s School of Management. The center prepares students for all decision-making processes involving elements of uncertainty, and helps them gain the ability to identify risks and manage them effectively.
Shapiro has been leading efforts to incorporate use of Bloomberg Terminals and other technologies in the curricula for the School of Management. He organized a professional conference at NYIT on the outlook for the economy and Wall Street in 2009, when opportunities appeared bleak in the economy.
He currently acts as an economic and financial consultant, where he serves as an expert witness in federal state courts, prepares external reports, and provides litigation support to attorneys.
Shapiro came to NYIT in 2008, after teaching for more than 20 years at the University of New Haven. There, he most recently chaired the Department of Economics and Finance in the College of Business, and was the director of the university’s Center for Risk Management and Insurance.
Shapiro was formerly a senior economist at the New York Telephone Company and research analyst for the U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division in the Economic Policy Office. He also served as a research analyst in various organizations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Shapiro earned his Ph.D. in financial economics and master’s degree in economics from Georgetown University. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from the University of Virginia.
