Biography
Sharon L. Koehler, D.O., F.A.C.S., educates medical students at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) of NYIT. She also maintains a clinical practice as a breast surgeon at both the Academic Health Center on the NYIT campus in Old Westbury and the Family Health Care Center in Central Islip. Dr. Koehler has privileges to perform surgery at North Shore University Hospital, Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center, and Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.
Dr. Koehler joined NYIT in 2011, and her current research interests include the integration of osteopathic manipulative treatment to the management of women with breast pathology.
Prior to her arrival at NYIT, Dr. Koehler pioneered a breast health service at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where she led a team focused on the elimination of health care disparities in the surrounding impoverished community. The AVON Foundation for Women awarded Brookdale two grants enabling the implementation of her innovative patient navigation program.
Dr. Koehler is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, the American Society of Breast Diseases, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine Alumni Association(past president and current member of the board of directors), and the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society.
Dr. Koehler received her bachelor’s degree from Emory University, her master’s degree from Adelphi University, and her doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology. Dr. Koehler completed her general surgery residency at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center as well as a breast surgery fellowship at St Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital Center.
