Biography
With more than 30 years of teaching and clinical experience, Mindy Haar, Ph.D., R.D., C.D.N., oversees the didactic program in dietetics and the graduate program in Clinical Nutrition, which has transitioned from a traditional program to an online program. Haar has also taught courses both online and in traditional classrooms at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
Haar joined NYIT in 2004, and is active in several academic committees and professional organizations. Presently, she is part of a task force charged with expanding the online offerings at NYIT and writing standards for all future online courses.
She is a Registered Dietitian, a New York State Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist, a New York State Certified Early Interventionist, an American Council on Exercise Certified Personal Trainer, and an American Red Cross Certified Instructor in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid. She currently acts as a nutrition and health consultant and the nutrition director for Fitwize4Kids, a franchise model for children’s fitness gyms.
Prior to working at NYIT, Haar taught at Adelphi University, Brooklyn College, Reenas Bais Yaacov High School, and SKA High School.
In the clinical sphere, Haar has worked as an outpatient nutritionist in many different settings. She served as chief nutritionist of the New York Institute for Child Development developing nutrition programs for hyperactive and learning disabled children. At the Cleveland Clinic Hospital, she counseled outpatients upon referral by the departments of Executive Health, Sports Medicine, Urology, and Cardiology, and was a faculty member in the physician assistant's training program.
She earned her Ph.D. in health science at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, with a focus is on student perception of community in online courses.
Haar graduated with a master's degree in nutrition education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and cum laude from Barnard College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
