Lasers in Medicine: Working on the Cutting Edge of Surgery

This presentation starts with the invention of the laser, including the story of the epic battle over the laser’s origins. Reinisch then discusses laser-tissue interactions and examples of how the laser is used in applications such as airway surgery, podiatry, and dentistry. All are welcome to attend this entertaining talk; no background in the field of study is needed.

  • Lou Reinisch, Ph.D., NYIT acting provost and vice president of academic affairs

A physicist, Reinisch was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Muenster in Germany and a research associate at the Biological Research Center in Szeged, Hungary. He has held positions at Northeastern University and Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand, among other places. He is a frequent public speaker, has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, and has nearly 50 book chapters in textbooks and proceedings. In his role as acting provost, Reinisch is a strong advocate for improving higher-level education via hands-on learning and interdisciplinary education, giving students today a background to succeed in the jobs of tomorrow.

This event is part of the Interdisciplinary Studies Spring 2017 Lecture Series hosted by the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Education. Events in the lecture series feature one speaker discussing an interdisciplinary research topic or project in depth, followed by a question and answer period.
