App Development Policy

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES FOR APPLICATIONS DEVELOPMENT
NYIT OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING

When developing NYIT applications (apps) for iOS, Android, or any platform, it’s important to comply with university policies, copyright and trademark law, and intellectual property and licensing considerations before releasing any app. Here are the required steps to follow for developing NYIT apps:

  1. All applications developers must initiate their project by sending a proposal stating purpose, scope, audience, and timeline for their app to updates@nyit.edu (subject line: NYIT App Proposal).

  2. Within two weeks, a member of the NYIT Office of Communications and Marketing (C&M) editorial, design, and web development team will schedule a launch meeting to address:
    • Development timeline and review process by C&M and IT
    • Branding (logo, colors, editorial style)
    • IT considerations and requirements
    • Sources and maintenance of app content
    • Platforms (iOS, Android, others)
    • Copyright issues
    • App store review and approval

  3. NYIT: You may only use “NYIT” or “New York Institute of Technology” in the name of your application if you have received permission from C&M.

  4. Logos: You may only use the official NYIT logo or athletics logo. Please submit a logo request form (found at nyit.edu/paweb) to the Department of Publications and Advertising. To protect our copyright and brand, NYIT’s logo and athletic logos cannot be modified or animated in any way.

  5. Respecting copyright: All music and still photography used in applications developed on behalf of NYIT must comply with copyright. Be sure that any licensing rights you purchase cover all the intended uses for your app. For example, if your app is originally developed only for Android, you may need to purchase additional rights before releasing a version for use on the iPhone. Note: the Office of Communications and Marketing has rights to certain music that you may be able to use.

  6. Intellectual property: Ownership of any applications created on behalf of, for coursework while a student at, or while employed by NYIT are the property of NYIT.

  7. University policies: Apps developed for use at or by NYIT must comply with all university policies, including: Code of Responsible Computer Usage.
